Class Descriptions

The Center for Dance is known for our well-rounded dance education, including ballet, tap, jazz,
lyrical, modern and contemporary. The Center for Dance invites female and male dancers, ages 2
and up, to join our classes for enjoyment or for competitive dance. Our focus is on the fundamentals –
highly qualified dance instructors, professional studios with sprung floors, proper dress attire, warmups,
discipline, terminology, practice, technique, solid work ethic and continued development are the
cornerstones at The Center for Dance. We are recognized for excellence in tap, jazz, contemporary
and hip hop. We want to produce high quality dancers that have choices to continue dance in their
future, if they choose to do so. If you are ready to dance, this studio is for you!


DANCE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

PRINCESS / LITTLE ROYALS
This dance style is a fun introduction to the basics of dance while acclimating dancers to the structure
of a classroom. We begin by exploring our bodies through movement to music, learning body
awareness and differences in movement. In this class students focus on coordination, rhythm,
balance, and control over their bodies through interactive and enjoyable songs and dances. We use
creative and imaginative movement to teach dance and begin the basics of ballet technique.
Ages:                     2 yrs
Class Attire:          Leotard, tights, ballet shoes, hair pulled back
Prerequisites:       None

PRE-BALLET
This class is designed for the 3-4 year old child that is interested in beginning their journey as a ballet
dancer. Students will learn to follow simple instructions, count to the beat of the music and begin to
use the barre and floor, as the older dancers do. Each class will begin with coordination based
exercises that emphasize stretching the legs, pointing the toes, implementation of posture and body placement.
Basic ballet concepts are taught and learned, including 1st and 2nd position, plie, releve, and chasse.
This class is a fun introduction to classical ballet combined with the use of contemporary children’s
music and movement to keep students interested and engaged.

BALLET
Highly formalized steps and gestures created to build the most important foundation in a dancer’s
education. This style focuses on abdominal control, body alignment, proper placement, strengthening,
flexibility and injury prevention. Discipline, structure, as well as terminology and definitions (in French)
are also included in the curriculum. Ballet is the foundation for all dance, and we strongly encourage
each of our students to include ballet in their dance curriculum.

Prerequisites:       Beginning ballet in order to advance to higher levels

Acro for Dancers with Miss Melissa
A class that focuses on jumps, leaps, flexibility, strength, and tumbling to help dancers improve their
athleticism. A good class to take if dancers are interested in incorporating tricks into their dancing.

TAP
Percussive dance is one of the oldest forms of human expression. Tap dance is America’s
contribution to the evolution of this ancient art. The Center for Dance is proud to teach a tap
curriculum that honors heritage and trains dancers in correct technique and intricate rhythms.
Classes:                Intro, Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced
Ages:                     4 & up
Class Attire:          Any color dance attire, tap shoes
Prerequisites:       None

HIP HOP
A style generated from urban/street dance. High energy, hard hitting and tons of personality are the
characteristics this style includes. Dancers will learn a fusion of social dances, popping and locking,
break dance and commercial hip hop as seen in music videos, and TV shows.
Classes:                Funky Time, Intro, Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced
Ages:                     4 & up
Class Attire:          Any comfortable clothes, clean gym shoes (No baggy pants. No oversized t-shirts.
No street shoes in studios.)
Prerequisites:       None

JAZZ
An upbeat, high energy and sassy style. Using its foundations of ballet to create shapes through
dance. Isolations of the chest, hips, arms and flexibility are used to cultivate this unique and fun style.
Basic Jazz and Lyrical Jazz are the versions taught at CFD.

Ages:                     6 & up
Class Attire:          Any color dance attire, jazz shoes/ballet shoes
Prerequisites:       None

LYRICAL / CONTEMPORARY
An extension of ballet that expresses and showcases emotion, while using its creative patterns and
timing to stimulate and challenge the dancers. This style is shown through long extending beautiful
movements and flexibility. Taking a ballet class appropriate to level is mandatory for this style.

Ages:                     7 & up
Class Attire:          Any color dance attire, jazz shoes/paws
Prerequisites:       Ballet

MODERN
A series of athletic, sweeping movements, isolations, and grounded steps formulated from the
Graham and Horton technique. Dancers practice a movement style and quality that will show great
benefits in various other styles. Taking a ballet class appropriate to level is mandatory for this style.

Ages:                    10 & up
Class Attire:         Any color dance attire, jazz shoes/paws
Prerequisites:       Ballet appropriate to level

MUSICAL THEATER
Classes:                Teen Musical Theatre
Ages:                     8 & up
Class Attire:          Any Dance Attire
Prerequisites:       None

POINTE
Pointe is the practice of dancing on your toes which requires extremely strong legs and feet.
Evaluations and prerequisites are required to register for Pointe classes.
Classes: Intermediate & Advanced
Ages: 12 & up
Class Attire: Black leotard, pink tights, pointe shoes, hair in a bun
Prerequisites: Ballet, evaluations and prerequisites are required.

POMS TECHNIQUE
A class that focuses on the specific techniques needed to try out for middle school or high school
poms. Besides technique, performance and flexibility are also emphasized.
Classes: Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced
Ages: 12 & up
Class Attire: Dance Attire
Prerequisites: None

ADULT CLASSES
CFD is pleased to offer adult dance classes to compliment your active lifestyle.
Classes:             Tap, Hip Hop Workout

CLASS POLICIES 2017 – 2018

  • All students registered for BALLET III or above are required to take at least 2 BALLET CLASSES PER WEEK.
  • All lyrical and modern classes also require attending a ballet class!
  • All advanced or company classes are upper level classes. In order to maintain the integrity of our advanced classes Ballet is required. In order to remain in the advanced level, students are only allowed to miss THREE CLASSES for any reason in a 5 session period. After 3 absences the student will be dropped to a lower level class. NO EXCEPTIONS!
